Trying to protect your family from the swine flu? Arming yourself with the facts about swine flu can go a long way to giving you success and some peace of mind.

An active family is hard to keep up with. Different schedules for employment, school, and household responsibilities make it difficult to protect your family from exposure. Implementing some simple methods of protection based on the facts about swine flu can limit exposure and tip the scales in your favor.

The swine flu can be thwarted using the same precautions as you would for the seasonal flu. Effective defense measures are base on good common sense. When it comes to swine flu and ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is one of the facts about swine flu not stressed enough.

The first line of defense is hand washing. Do this regularly, impressing upon all family members its importance. Start by setting a good example. Soap and water with 15 seconds of scrubbing the hands works wonders. Also an alcohol based hand sanitizer is effective. Have these items available in several places around the home and encourage their use.

Although the swine flu can get airborne, the fact is, physical contact is by far the biggest transmission vehicle. Door handles, refrigerator, phones, keyboards and any other things touched in your home can spread the virus between individuals. Proper hand washing and keeping these items clean and disinfected will limit exposure.

Keep plenty of tissues for use and be sure they are properly disposed of. Eyes, nose and mouth are the main areas of concern so stress the importance of keeping ones hands out of these areas unless using tissues. Coughing and sneezing is inevitable. Be sure this is done into a tissue or piece of clothing. One’s elbow or shoulder is better in a pinch but coughing and sneezing into the open air or one’s hands is to be avoided. Again, after any of these events, be sure to encourage proper hand washing.

If there becomes confirmed cases of in your community, limit your public exposure as much as possible and be sure all hands are cleaned when returning home. Be sure not to share drinking or eating utensils and wash these in a dishwasher if possible.

If a family member seems to have flu symptoms keep them home. The contagious period is about seven days long after symptoms manifest themselves. Keep the above measures in effect to limit exposure to other family members. If any symptoms persist or seem unusual be sure to see a doctor for expert medical advice.

One thing to remember is not to overreact in any of this. Encouragement to follow these principles and not enforcing strict rules will go a long way to maintaining a cooperative spirit among all family members. You don’t need a rebellion on your hands. If someone becomes ill it will most likely be over in a week or two and things will be back to normal.

Knowing the facts about swine flu and not overreacting to this pandemic will go a long way to the health and happiness of your family.

Is the H1N1 as bad as everyone is saying?

What are the facts about swine flu I can use to protect myself and my family?

These are down to earth questions that everyday people like ourselves need to have answered. The facts about swine flu, not the hype, would be helpful so we could protect ourselves and our loved ones.

So how bad is it?

To quote the C.D.C., “From April 15, 2009 to July 24, 2009, states reported a total of 43,771 confirmed and probable cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) infection. Of these cases reported, 5,011 people were hospitalized and 302 people died.”

I did not want to write about statistics, there is plenty on the Internet. I only mention them to emphasize the facts about H1N1 as serious and that it constitutes a major threat to the general population.

Let us concentrate on the facts about the swine flu that we can use to arm ourselves to minimize its affects on us and our families. The swine flu is a virus, the same preventive measures and good common sense used for other illnesses, especially the seasonal flu are just as effective against swine flu.

For example:

The simple act of hand washing is in itself is a big deterrent to contracting or spreading the swine flu. Our hands come in contact with many items used daily by other people. Door handles, keyboards, sinks, phones and even other peoples hands are all vehicles that can transmit germs and viruses. We can keep these exposures to a minimum by washing our hands regularly with soap and water or even using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Use disposable tissues when coughing or cough into your elbow or shoulder if you do not have a tissue. Of course avoid as much as possible, anyone who is coughing in public without applying this common sense.

If there are confirmed cases in your area, limit your public exposure as much as possible and be sure to clean your hands often while out and especially upon returning home. If public school is closed, avoid putting your children in daycare or other group settings.

If you think you may have flu symptoms please remain home. This is your community responsibility. The contagious period lasts about seven days after symptoms start. It is noteworthy that you are actually contagious at least one day before symptoms manifest themselves. If any symptoms persist or seem unusual be sure to see a doctor for expert medical advice.

Avoid touching your mouth nose or eyes as much as possible. These are the most common entry points for the virus. Although swine flu can be airborne, for the most part it is spread through hand to face contact.

These are just some of the facts about swine flu you need to know to protect yourself and your loved ones. By all means take the time to educate yourself on this and other do-able methods to keep the affects of this pandemic on you and your family to a minimum.

It seems that there is one thing that is spreading faster than the disease itself and that is misinformation about Swine Flu. It won’t be long now before we will be coming up on almost a year since it introduced itself and people are still debating what to actually call it. H1N1? Swine Flu? Hey! Who cares?

What is needed are real facts that won’t be corrected a month of two from now. Solid facts that an employer can use to implement a program to protect employees, customers and clients. For instance research scientists are still unsure how it’s even spread and are still debating whether or not the virus is contained in human feces.

So understand one thing and that is that as much as he would like you to believe that he has this thing fully under control, Uncle Sam is not going to come riding in to the rescue just in the nick of time. Also understand that the double-speak that the government has been issuing regarding vaccine supply, is their way of saying that there isn’t going to be enough to go around.

So like it or not the Swine Flu is coming to your neck of the woods and you are going to have employees working for you that either willingly or unwillingly, haven’t been vaccinated. You are going to have people who work for you contracting the swine Flu but how you deal with it will determine if your business suffers financially or not.

You basically have two areas to cover and these are the psychological effects of the disease and the physical effects. The psychological effects will keep employees home if they are worried about contracting it at work and physically catching the disease will also obviously keep workers home as well.

Fact: The Swine Flu can be detected in its most early stages by checking a person for a body temperature increase.

Fact: Disinfectants and anti-bacterial wipes are the best front line defense tools in a work area.

Fact: Good quality tight fitting face masks are also highly effective - particularly if they have been treated with disinfectant.

Even so, none of these preventative measures will work unless you the employer or supervisor makes sure that they are used in a concerted effort. That is that all employees accept and take part in a prevention program. Here’s a surprise for you. You may have more than one worker who may for his or her own misguided reasons refuse to participate.

“God will take care of them” “Hey I don’t get sick” “I’m a tough guy and this stuff is for sissies” “Its a government conspiracy” Get ready because you will be dealing with at least one of them and these are just a few of the reasons that you will hear as to why they are throwing caution to the wind.

Your first step you can take is to put together some type of information package to distribute to your workers and managers, outlining the preventative measures you will implement to protect them. This can then be distributed to inform, coordinate and reassure your workers, as well as identify those employees who are going to present themselves as problems, so they can be dealt with early on.

What is “Swine flu”?

Swine flu is a viral infection basically found in pigs that is caused by swine influenza virus. It is very rare to get swine flu in humans except in some cases where people have direct contact with pigs. Currently, the nature of swine flu virus transmission has changed and it can be transmitted from humans to humans even if there is no prior contact with pigs. There are four main sub-types of the virus, but the most recent isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

How does the swine flu spread?

In the present outbreak of swine flu, the virus is spread by air borne contact. Infection can be transmitted through cough, sneeze, or even by touching the objects that have been touched by an infected individual. Chances of infection are more if after touching these objects one touches the eyes, mouth, or nose.

Can you get swine flu by eating pork?

Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 70ºC and above kills the swine flu virus.

What are the symptoms of swine flu?

Since it is a viral infection, its symptoms are similar to Influenza. In humans, the symptoms include:

-Fever

-Cough

-Sore throat

-Runny nose

-Headache

-Fatigue

-General body aches

-Diarrhea and vomiting

-Neurological symptoms (Especially in children)

How to prevent swine flu?

There are several ways to prevent swine flu. Wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol based sanitizers after being out in the public. Also eat a healthy nutritious diet and drink plenty of fluids and keep your household articles clean with disinfectant or diluted chlorine bleach. Avoid close contact with people who might be infected. Wear a face mask (consider using an N95 respirator) if you must come into close contact with a sick person.

How to diagnose swine flu?

Diagnosis of swine flu is done by collecting respiratory specimens during the first 4 to 5 days of illness (10 days in children) and getting real-time RT-PCR and/or viral culture specifically for Swine Influenza A (H1N1) Virus. Hence, if one has any of the swine flu symptoms, a doctor’s consultation is necessary.

What is the treatment of swine flu?

As it is a viral illness, hence, majority make a full recovery without requiring medical attention or antiviral drugs. However, the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses has been found to be effective. In the recent outbreak, the virus has been found to be resistant to amantadine and rimantadine.

Is there a vaccine for swine flu?

There is no vaccine for swine flu as yet. But vaccines are being made in large quantities and clinical tests will begin in August 2009.

How to deal with a swine flu patient at home?

If any of your family members have fever with cough or sore throat, make sure to consult your doctor at the earliest. Suspected person should stay home for seven days after symptoms begin and should wear a face mask or N95 respirator. He/ She should throw the used tissues and other disposable items in the trash and immediately wash his hands afterwards. Alternatively, wipes or gels with alcohol in them can be used to clean hands. Linens, eating utensils and dishes belonging to suspected cases should be washed by using household laundry soap and tumbled dry. One should wash one’s hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub immediately after handling dirty laundry and other household items of suspected individuals. Children should be strictly prohibited from close contact and an infected breast feeding mother should express her breast milk, and the child should be fed by someone else. If the investigations come out positive, then the infected individual should be quarantined in an isolated ward in a hospital and treatment started to prevent complications.

What is the role of face masks in swine flu prevention?

The role of face masks and respirators as the first line of defense against the virus is still controversial. But these offer additional protection against the air borne illness.N-95 respirators are better than face masks or surgical masks but it is hard to breathe through them for extended periods and are inconvenient to wear for children and people with facial hair.

What is the prognosis of patients with swine flu?

Most of the patients of swine flu recover with no complications. Patients with depressed immune function or those who are seriously ill have worse prognosis compared to those who are immunocompetent.

How does swine flu kill?

Swine flu being an air borne infection infects the respiratory system chiefly lungs and causes lung infections. It can also cause secondary infection which can affect the vital organs of the body and lead to death.

What precautions should you take while travelling?

Apart from the general measures described above to prevent swine flu, if you become ill in any way while in the country, you should seek medical advice immediately. Also consult your health care provider and discuss the various risks associated with the disease if you are travelling to any country that has reported cases of flu among birds, swine, or humans.

You have all undoubtedly heard all the recent news about swine flu-but have you thought about what it means for the seniors in your life, your aging parents or you as a caregiver? To date, almost all cases in the North America have been mild and the chances of contracting swine flu are still remote. Just yesterday, President Obama released this official statement: “We are closely monitoring the emerging cases of swine flu in the United States. This is obviously the cause for concern and requires a heightened state of alert, but it’s not a cause for alarm.” However, according to the World Health Organization, the number of confirmed cases of swine flu worldwide increased to 236 on Thursday; this is a substantial increase from the previous day’s total of 147. Anyone with an aging parent or a senior in their life, including all certified care managers, should be concerned about the recent swine flu pandemic and the potential risks for seniors. This group is at particular risk due to difficulties recovering if exposed. It is very important to ensure that all home health aides are educated about swine flu Prevention Guidelines as prescribed by the CDC Center for Disease Control(CDC). Obtaining relevant information from all active caregivers, including recent travels and experienced flu symptoms, is a key component of prevention. There are steps that professional and family caregivers as well as the community at large can take to decrease exposure and combat symptoms of swine flue. The Center for Disease Control is constantly updating their site, but the current guidelines and information about swine flu for caregivers is as follows: Swine flu’s symptoms resemble those of seasonal flu-fever, sore throat, cough, congestion, chills, headache, body aches and fatigue. Some patients also report diarrhea and vomiting. If you have symptoms, see your doctor or visit a community clinic. A medical provider’s diagnosis is important and prescription antiviral drugs are most effective when taken within 48 hours of the appearance of symptoms. If you are ill, avoid travel and do not go to work or school. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based cleaners and hand sanitizers. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then discard the tissue. Or if necessary, use your upper sleeve-not your hands. If you’re healthy, wash your hands often and avoid ill people. The flu’s incubation period is 24 to 48 hours. Make certain to follow any new developments regarding public health advice, such as avoiding crowds. Develop an emergency plan. Your plan should include maintaining a supply of food, medicines, facemasks, alcohol-based hand rubs and other essentials.

Swine Flu is very big news indeed right now, and more and more cases are being confirmed daily all over the world. The amount of swine flu cases could be hugely reduced if people can be a little more careful in their day to day lives. Before you are able to figure out a way to combat the spread of this awful virus, you need to know how it can be transmitted between people in an everyday environment.

So to that end, here’s a look at what it is and how the virus is spread around people. Be mindful of your conduct and that of others when out and about, and you can play your part in slowing the spread of this awful virus.

Basically, Swine Flu is a respiratory disease that first became known in pigs. The strain of Swine Flu that is currently infecting humans is a mutated strain dubbed H1N1 by the American government. Ordinarily, this particular virus would not affect humans, but the different strain has proven top be lethal for many people, and very difficult to deal with for others.

The strain that is passed between humans is airborne, and is passed on by contact with infected people. It has an incubation period of roughly 7 days, thus it may not manifest itself until a week after you come into contact with an infected person.

The name ‘Swine Flu’ doesn’t mean you can become infected with the virus by eating pork. It is caleld Swine Flu as it primarily attacked pigs before mutating. That said, you can be certain to destroy bacteria and viruses (including Swine Flu) in food by cooking things at a temperature of 160 degrees Farenheit.

Unfortunately it may well be impossible to contain the pathogen , thus you must be on your guard from this invisible menace. Put your hand over your mouth when coughing or sneezing (or ideally, use a tissue or handkerchief) to stop the spread of germs.

Wash your hands at every opportunity. Also, it would be beneficial if you carried around some form of hand cleanser gel or similar product. There are a selection of these products available on the market that are inexpensive and very effective. A small price to pay to help you secure your health.

Be sure to keep yourself as safe as possible by concentrating on hygiene and not spreading germs, and together we can all make a difference and slow the spread of Swine Flu across the planet. Think of the friends you have and your family as well as everyone else. Help everybody to stay clean of Swine Flu.

Wherever you travel in the world, there are certain risks and considerations that you take into account without even realising it, such as acceptable women’s dress in Muslim countries; vaccinations prior to travelling to countries with Malaria risk; even making sure you carry the correct currency and learn foreign phrases in a local dialect.

The risks involved in disregarding such matters are obvious, yet there are many more involved in international travel that you cannot prepare for, such as viral outbreaks. When, in 2009, an outbreak of Swine Flu, Influenza A virus subtype H1N1, was announced in Mexico, the U.N. World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Unites States’ Centre for Disease Control (CDC) warned that the situation, if uncontrolled, could escalate to a pandemic. The outbreak currently sits at Level Five, just below the required Level Six to indicate a pandemic.

Although widespread international panic ensued and untold numbers of holidaymakers were disrupted, whether they were visiting or had visited Mexico or not, potentially millions were undeniably saved because the threat was taken seriously, with travellers screened at airports and placed in quarantine if they were suspected to be carrying the virus.

Such unforeseen circumstances challenged international air travel to its limits, forcing countries to work together to ensure a pandemic did not occur as people returned unchecked to their home countries before a diagnosis was made global, in April 2009. In total, over 5,000 cases were announced in Mexico alone, with 97 deaths. By June, the virus was said to have reached over 66 countries worldwide.

Because of such unavoidable risks, it’s vital that when you travel you are fully covered by the appropriate travel insurance that ensures you can receive medical attention whenever it’s required. Failing to carry valid and appropriate travel insurance could result in delayed treatment and high medical bills.

If you’re planning to travel to global destinations, then you could benefit from worldwide travel insurance, which can cover long stays, short breaks, single trips, or even multiple trips throughout the year to anywhere in the world and would enable you to seek medical assistance in the country you visit.

You could also benefit from taking particular precautions in learning how to prevent the spread of infection. Good respiratory and hand hygiene is best in the case of Swine Influenza. In the same way you would prevent the spread of human flu, you can apply precautions such as always using and disposing of a clean tissue once sneezing, and washing your hands after sneezing. Should you experience any flu-like symptoms drink plenty of fluids, rest and take paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin to ease any symptoms such as head or muscle ache. As with common flu, should symptoms persist for a prolonged period, or if new symptoms manifest, such as rash or aversion to bright lights, then you should consult your doctor.

You could also benefit from adhering to official advice on travel and considering whether your trip or holiday is necessary. If you do find yourself in an international location and you could be at risk of infection of any kind, pay attention to local health warnings and advice and, if in doubt, seek the opinion of a medical professional.

Recently in Auckland New Zealand a news is breaking hourly about a the H1 N1 influenza virus, which was first reported in Mexico. The virus, common in pigs, has mutated so that it now has the ability to infect humans and is transmitted by coughing and sneezing.

The mutated H1 N1 strain has never been seen before. Therefore, human immune systems don’t have the ability to recognize it. This leave New Zealand vulnerable to developing what has been referred to as “Swine Flu”.

Health authorities in New Zealand are already warned about the very real possibility of the swine flu reaching epidemic. people who live in New Zealand are worried and seeking health advice. so if you are a healthy person but taken lots of supplements to strengthen and boost your immune system then please continue reading I am going to show you how to boost your immune system without have to worry about taken lots of supplements or seeking Doctors advice

There are several precautions , which you can take to hopefully help you boost your immune system and not contract the swine flu, lets start with the most common sense precautions that will not boost your immune system but it will keep you safe , which include frequent washing of hands, keeping the hands away from the face, avoid traveling and attending crowds area especially the one that attract tourist .

Research scientists also recognize that the best defense against contracting any illness, including viral illnesses such as influenza, is to have a healthy, vital and responsive immune system.

have you ever wonder why you dont get chicken Pox more than once, that because your immune system has a memory molecule conatin the information of that virus this memeory molecule is called Transfer factor.

A simple thing that everyone can do to boost his or her immune system is take Transfer Factors.

Transfer Factors have the ability to boost your immune system by augment one’s immune system’s responsiveness through stimulation of our first line of defense, natural killer cells. Recent research has also revealed that Transfer Factors positively affect our humoral immune system, which produces antibodies against invading pathogens. The consumption of Transfer Factors during this potential pandemic of the swine flu would appear to be a reasonable and recommended course of action to help you protect and boost your immune system against swine flu H1 N1 .

for more information about Transfer Factor watch this video How to boost your immune system with Transfer Factor

Although the chances of your catching swine flu are relatively low, it is still possible you could become infected. But if it does happen, don’t lose hope. The virus can be fought with natural immune system boosters and antiviral substances. During this pandemic, natural remedies can help you recover from even a deadly disease.

Furthermore, proper natural remedies can help prevent you from catching this disease, or any disease, in the first place. By strengthening your immune system, you increase your body’s ability to fight disease, viruses, and bacteria.

One way to boost your immune system is to take large amounts of Vitamin C. This antiviral vitamin can block the enzyme known as neuraminidase, which is needed by a virus in order to reproduce. There are anecdotes of people surviving the Spanish Flu by drinking large doses of Vitamin C. The elderly should take Vitamin E along with Vitamin C, to enhance the effects of the vitamin.

Garlic is common in most kitchens and it can also be used in the fight against the swine flu epidemic. It is an efficient natural antiviral herb. It is most potent when freshly crushed. Garlic must be consumed within one hour of crushing. Recommended dosage is two to three cloves per day. Organic garlic is more potent and effective than non-organic garlic. But remember that it can burn the stomach when taken in large amounts, so its a good idea to eat it with bread or yogurt.

My favorite way of taking large amounts of garlic, to fight normal colds and flues, is by spreading butter on toast and then adding garlic slices, or crushed garlic.

Possibly the best alternative to the medical drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, is Green Tea. This is a highly effective antiviral. It decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a, and inhibits the reproduction of neuraminidase as well. Best of all, it is natural, and therefore it doesn’t have any of the harsh side effects that synthetic drugs have. If you want to use Green Tea for this purpose, remember that what you find on the shelves of a grocery store will probably be relatively ineffective. Organic varieties, particularly those grown for health or medicinal purposes, are the best.

Another antiviral you can get is Resveratrol. It comes from the Japanese Knotwood root, from red grapes, and from raisins. It causes your cells to stop manufacturing viruses. There are supplements available in liquid form, for better absorption, and it has no toxic effects.

Apple juice is an antiviral which is available just about everywhere. But if you want to have the best results, try making your own, in a juicer. You should include the skin and pulp. This is more powerful than simply using commercially-available apple juice.

Scuttellaria, better known as Skullcap, is an herb that can be taken as tea. It is an effective antiviral that is also used as a mild tranquilizer. Just like other natural antivirals, it inhibits the reproduction of neuraminidase.

Cat’s Claw, or Uncaria Tomentosa, boosts one’s immune system as well as decreasing the production of cytokine TNF-a. Your white blood cell count can be increased with this treatment. Although no toxicity is noted, however, it should not be used by children and pregnant women. This is due to its damaging effect on the DNA of growing cells.

There are still plenty of other natural treatments for the swine flu that you can find in your cupboard. You don’t necessarily need to drink synthetic medicines, or get vaccinations that can be harmful to your body.

Disclaimer: This article does not constitute medical advice. If you are ill, you should consult your doctor.
